Management teamRupert A.S. Montagu GENERAL PARTNERRupert co-founded Montagu Newhall Associates in 2000. Rupert's close relationships and experience in the private equity industry have proved instrumental in gaining access to a number of funds raised by top-tier venture capital firms. Rupert continues to take part in managing and investing Montagu Newhall funds; however, he has transitioned to a reduced time commitment, spending half of his time on Montagu Newhall activities and the other half of his time on unrelated, non-competitive activities. From 1998 to 2000, Rupert was Director of Client Relations at Altius, which advises large institutional investors on private equity fund investing. From 1988 to 1992 he was Marketing Manager in the Investment Management Division of Hambros Bank in London, where he was responsible for marketing the Bank's pension fund management service and for developing investment products targeted at the Bank's institutional and private client investor base. Between 1994 and 1997 Rupert was Marketing Manager for Brown-Forman Corporation in London. Rupert is a non-executive director of Polar Capital Technology Trust, a London-based investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange. Ashton Newhall GENERAL PARTNERAshton co-founded Montagu Newhall Associates in 2000, and manages the Company's office in Owings Mills, Maryland. Ashton is a third-generation venture capitalist. Before co-founding Montagu Newhall, he was at T. Rowe Price Associates ("T. Rowe Price"), where he was one of the youngest marketers of the firm's investment management services to both institutions and high net worth investors. Specifically, he marketed T. Rowe Price investment management services to the general partners of venture funds and entrepreneurs in both the United States and abroad. Ashton serves on the Board of Elon University, ForHealth Technologies, Inc., Domain Associates, the Limited Partners Board for QuestMark Partners, and the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association Selection Committee. Previously he was a Director at Commonfund Capital, a fund-of-funds firm that, as of the time of his departure, managed nearly $5.5 billion in commitments across venture capital, private equity, international private capital and natural resources programs. While at Commonfund Capital, Jim helped lead the due diligence efforts on many of the firm's top tier venture capital managers. He also spent three years at Pfizer where he was primarily responsible for managing the private capital portfolio of Pfizer's $2.5 billion pension plan. On behalf of the pension plan, Jim made commitments to funds managed by some of the leading venture capital and buyout managers in the industry. In addition to his pension fund experience, Jim had several corporate finance assignments in Pfizer's Research and Development Group and Pfizer's Operational, Planning and Analysis Group. Prior to joining Montagu Newhall, Patrick spent nine years at Grotech Ventures where he focused on early and expansion stage venture investments in technology and communications companies. Patrick was involved with several of Grotech's portfolio companies including Advertising.com (AOL), USinternetworking (AT&T), iBiquity Digital, Hatteras Networks, BroadSoft, Fieldglass Software and Ziptronix. Prior to joining Grotech Patrick worked in the Media and Telecommunications Investment Banking Group at Alex. Brown and Sons and its successors, BT Alex. Spilman V PrincipalJohn joined Montagu Newhall Associates in January, 2009, bringing 18 years of public and private investment experience. He is currently the Portfolio Manager of Montagu Newhall Crossover Ventures I, L.P. Previously he was a Partner at Crown Advisors International where he was a Co-Portfolio Manager of their private-public equity funds. During his tenure at Crown, John was focused on small and micro cap public companies as well as select private company investments. John started his investment management career at Osprey Funds Management, a long-short U.S. public equity fund, and migrated with the management team to Soros Fund Management as an Analyst, and then to Tahoe Advisors as a Founding Partner and Co-Portfolio Manager. He also has several years of sell-side public equity experience at Brown Advisory, DB Alex. Brown, and Tucker Anthony. John currently has Board of Directors responsibilities for several of the Montagu Newhall direct investments in the healthcare sector and is currently on the Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Eric manages all of Montagu Newhall's finance and back office operations. Previously, Eric worked as a Manager in the Assurance and Business Advisory Services Practice for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, in Baltimore. Eric served both public and private institutions and was responsible for providing Sarbanes Oxley Implementation and Compliance, oversaw the Initial Public Offering of a local biotech firm and was responsible for supervising regular SEC filings for his public clients. Additionally, Eric provided audit and advisory services to many of the area’s premier venture capital firms. Eric served on the PricewaterhouseCooopers’ audit of Montagu Newhall since 2002. After successful completion of the Analyst Program, John was promoted to Associate In February 2008 and later promoted to Senior Associate in May 2009. Jarrett, Jr., Director of Investor RelationsJay Jarrett joined Montagu Newhall in 2009 as Director of Investor Relations, where he is responsible for investor relations, marketing and coordinating the capital sourcing for the firm, enhancing investor communication and reporting, and managing existing relationships with the firm's existing client base. Jay has over 16 years of investment management experience working with institutions, consultants and private capital investors. Prior to joining Montagu Newhall, Jay served as Managing Director of PRP and PRC based in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for investor relations and capital sourcing at PRP, a principal investment management firm and at PRC, a boutique investment bank, where he led the third party capital placement efforts. Prior to joining PRP/PRC he was Senior Vice President of New Boston based in Boston, MA, where he directed the investor relations, marketing and capital sourcing efforts for the firm, and was a member of the investment and senior management committees. Previously, Jay was a Vice President with both Natixis Global Asset Management and United Asset Management Investment Services where he helped build very successful sales and client service groups catering to institutions, consultants and high net worth intermediary investors.
